Repeating Emergency Hexagon Pattern Headshot of Gabriel Holmquist

I’m Gabriel Holmquist a current student at ASU as apart of the Fulton School of engineering's Graphic Information Technology Major. I’m a passionate creative who likes to learn about multiple mediums and incorporating new skills to include into my work flows. Following are Skills along with examples where I've utalized them.

Here are some of my personal favorites

Product/ Magazine Photography

My product photography started in relation to my interest in assembling model kits, more commonly Bandai Namcos Gundam’s. I discovered a mock magazine by dots.evil.biz ‘KITBASH’ at Seattle Central College’s Portfolio Show. While flipping through it I got really excited, as apart of my major Graphic Information Technology degree I had been working on my own Photoshop and graphic design projects. They had opted to use photographs by Bandai Namco and Saint-ism, but did an amazing job writing small blurbs and really crisp presentation. I set up my own small scale photo studio in an attempt to replicate the profressional grade photos I was seeing. (A more through explanation can be found in the indepth study at the end of the section)

Here (above and below) were my results of some trial and error, figuring out a good workflow. I had done a good amount or research into the equipment more profressional (than I) hobbiest and companies were using. Really focusing on some images I had seen on the Japan Bandai Namco Photography and Saint-ism's home studio. I had some issues with finding good ways to diffuse the light to my liking, but found some other methods more simple than I thought. The most vital pieces to the setup I built was lighting. Focusing on that helped with doing more interesting edge lighting and making my paper backgrounds look a lot better.

DraftAuto

Through my interest in cars and motorsports I found inspiration in D-Sport and other car magzines from the early 2000s to create my own car magazine concept. As I develop my skills and knowledge I would like to produce a physical and digital magazine/zeen. I intially was really head strong going into working on the magazine, but then my momentum slowed just enough for me to take a step back and realize I might want to put more serious time and energy into making it the product I envisioned. I focused more on my studies in my major and spend the occasional block of time to discuss with the others in my friend group who are more knowledgable in cars what some articles might look like, not loosing site of the goal. The image below is the first issue I came out with.

Portrait/ Wildlife Photography

These are more my bread and butter when it comes to photography projects. When I’m in the mood to carry around my kit I have a Minolta macro lens 40-70mm, Minolta 150mm, and Canon 24mm. I frequent my local zoo and hangout with my friends when I get some free time. I make it so I do minimal work in post during these kinds of shoots taking time to make adjustments on the camera and lens to get the clarity and lighting I want. If I do have to make some edits in post it's minor lighting corrections or color adjustments.

3D Modeling

Animation Tests/ Learning Process

Component of a Final for a Photoshop class modeled in Blender

3d modeling in Blender has been one of my favorite areas of knowledge I've been working to expand. I really appreciate the amount of work that 3d artists and VFX artist put into making even small things like taking a mustache out of a shot or crazy effects for movies like SpeedRacer or Planet of the Apes. I find myself on and off returning to learn more about the program and taking time to learn how to integrate into projects for school and personal projects. I’m really lacking in more advanced texture work which I have my sights set on next. I’ve in the past spent a lot of time on modeling mechs and cars from imagination or reference. Featured are some animation tests and a background I used for one of my final Photoshop projects.

This animation is based on a few anime I really like mainly ‘Initial D’, ‘Wagan at Midnight’, and the movie ‘Speed Racer’. I find these kinds of works really inspirational and wanted to breakdown how I might achieve similar visuals and keep it in my back pocket. Granted the effects from ‘Wangan at Midnight’ which was released in 2009 wasn’t technically difficult but it had such a visual appeal to me. Luckily I was pretty happy with where I got over two afternoons.

This was another project that I ended up taking to a more finished state. I had begun with a separate test of modeling and adding an animation rig to a mech. After doing some basic playing around getting a feel for what I could do with it. Then I saw a cool trick of making a ring using the interior as a highway. So I went through adding particle effects, some cars to give a sense of speed, and make the scene feel like the character might be giving chase.

Spider Man from Spiderverse, I was pretty happy with, I used a rigged model. I was working on iterating on running cycles making it overall more smooth and give the speed sensation I was working towards.

3D Manufacturing/ Modeling for Production

This was one of my more recent projects as of July 2025. My girlfriend is into cosplaying and had completed and worn one as Bayonetta. However, She had made some really nice looking guns with foam which were functional as props but not durable. I spent some time though to model her some custom ones for her hand size and as a first attempt get some better ideas on where I could add thinks like the hammer cocking or an idea I had come up with was pulling parts from a nerf gun and implanting them into my model. These were the first attempt fully modeled and printed on my Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra

Early stages of 3D modeling Scarboro from Bayonetta

I started by getting everything modeled in Blender as I'm more comfortable with their enviroment. Then I moved to Autodesk Fusion and got it to the correct scaling, by going off my girlfriends hand size. There was a point where I figured due to some different ideas I was having I would 3d print the whole body and Dremel out space to figure out how the material would react.

The work continued in the CAD software Autodesk

My biggest concern was how thin the walls might get if I were to springs an some of the smaller components I had seen other prop makers use. I ended the experience with a lot learned and have already started working on the next iteration. I know my girlfriend also really likes to work on these kind of projects having more experience than me so handed them over with all the nesecarry hardware, with the last steps being spray paint and clear coat.

Teaching at id Tech

This would be hard for me not to mention even though it was a short stint as I had a lot on my plate at the time. I was a tutor for a short while at id Tech, a after school or extracurricular program for kids between 11-16. I had a few reoccurring students, but its something I really want to return to later in my career. I had a blast making student specific curriculums and helping them pursue personal projects.
