Hello, I’m Gabriel Holmquist a current student at ASU as apart of the Fulton School of engineering's Graphic Information Technology Major. I’m a passionate creative who likes to learn about multiple mediums and incorporating new skills to include into my work flows. Following are some of the projects I’ve worked on or are in progress.
Draft Auto, is a car magazine concept that I’ve had on the back burner for a long time. I’ve a slow creeping interest in cars and motorsports since I was a little kid. As I grow and learn I really want to produce, even an annual both physical and digital Magazine. I bought some D-Sport magazines from the early 2000s and look for new material for inspiration including picking up new indie magazines (zeens) going to the occasional car show when I can manage.
I was really inspired to try product photography as I own and build Gundam and other Bandai Namco model kits. I did enough research on how to set up my little photo studio like Saint-ism or the official Bandai Namco Pictures Inc lighting setups. After I had done some experimenting I went to a local graphic design show from Seattle Central College and saw a really cool mock magazine by dots.evil.biz ‘KITBASH’.
Here were my results of some practice and trying to figure out a good workflow. It really wasn’t too bad the only additional equipment I ordered were some smart light bulbs and articulating lamps. Doing this helped with doing more interesting edge lighting and making my paper backgrounds look a lot better.
These are more my bread and butter when it comes to photography projects. When I’m in the mood to carry around my kit I have a macro lens 40-70mm, 150mm, and 24mm at my disposal. I frequent my local zoo and hangout with my friends when I get some free time. These are a few examples of my work...
3d modeling in Blender has been one of my favorite past times. I really appreciate the amount of work that 3d artists and VFX artist put into making even small things like taking a mustache out of a shot look real. So I find myself on and off returning to learn more about the program and taking time to learn how to integrate into projects for school and personal projects. I think I’m really lacking in texture work which I have my sights set on next. I’ve in the past spent a lot of time on modeling mechs and cars from imagination or reference. Featured are some animation tests and a background I used for one of my final projects.
This was a test animation based on a few anime I really like mainly ‘Initial D’, ‘Wagan at Midnight’, and the movie ‘Speed Racer’. I find these kinds of works really inspirational and wanted to breakdown how I might achieve something similar and keep it in my back pocket. Granted the effects from ‘Wangan at Midnight’ which was released in 2009 wasn’t technically difficult but it had such a visual appeal to me. Luckily I was pretty happy with where I got over two afternoons.
This was another test that I ended up taking to a more finished state. I had begun with a separate test of modeling and adding an animation rig to a mech. After doing some basic playing around getting a feel for what I could do with it. Then I saw a cool trick of making a ring using the interior as a highway. So I went through adding particle effects, some cars to give a sense of speed, and make the scene feel like the character might be giving chase.
This was one of my more recent projects as of July 2025. My girlfriend is into cosplaying and had done one for Bayonetta as Bayonetta. She had made some really nice looking guns with foam and what was around her house. I really want to spend some time though to model her some custom for her hand size and as a first attempt get some better ideas on where I could add thinks like the hammer cocking or an idea I had come up with was pulling parts from a nerf gun and implanting them into my model.
After getting everything modeled in Blender I moved to Autodesk Fusion and got it to the correct scaling. There was a point where I figured due to some different ideas I was having I would 3d print the whole body and Dremel out space to figure out how the material would react.
biggest concern was how thin the walls might get if I were to springs an some of the smaller components I had seen other prop makers use. I ended to experience with a lot learned and have already started working on the next iteration. I know my girlfriend also really likes to work on these kind of projects having more experience than me so handed them over with the last steps being spray paint and clear coat.
This would be hard for me not to mention even though it was a short stint as I had a lot on my plate at the time. I was a tutor for a short while at id Tech, a after school or extracurricular program for kids between 11-16. I had a few reoccurring students, but its something I really want to return to later in my career. I had a blast making student specific curriculums and helping them pursue personal projects.
